798 Art District Overview

A comprehensive guide to the 798 Art District, Beijing's premier contemporary art hub.

The 798 Art District is a contemporary art zone located in the Dashanzi area of Beijing. It was originally a complex of factories built in the 1950s with assistance from the former Soviet Union and East Germany.

In the late 1990s, artists began to move into the vacant factory spaces, transforming them into studios, galleries, and creative spaces. Today, the 798 Art District is one of Beijing's most popular cultural destinations, featuring over 200 galleries, art spaces, and creative businesses.

The district is known for its distinctive industrial architecture, including Bauhaus-style buildings with high ceilings and large windows. It hosts numerous art exhibitions, cultural events, and performances throughout the year, attracting both local and international visitors.
